Stress And Obesity

Some people lose appetite when they are stressed out while others will munch away whatever they could find when confronted with stress. Stress is one of the leading indirect cause of obesity. A survey conducted indicates that a majority of the American eat meals while they are under stress.

Stress slows down metabolism and cause the heart rate and blood pressure to rise. Blood is diverted away from the stomach to the arms, legs and brain in preparation for survival mode. Such physiological stress affects the gut, digestion, assimilation of food and slow down the burning of calories. Thus it is never a good idea to eat while your body is under stress as it may cause heartburn, obesity and other problems such as gastroesophageal reflux or heartburn.

Stress may cause hormone inbalance and triggers the onset of a variety of health problems. Increased stress hormone such as cortisol may cause weight gain around midsection of the body. The visceral fat that gathers around the midsection and internal organs increase the risk of contracting diabetes and other diseases.

There are many ways to de-stress. Endorphins, better knowns as tranquilizing chemical are released into the brain during exercise and this help to calm , relax and rejuvenate the mind and body. Get adequate proper quality sleep to enable the body cells to repair and rejuvenate. Keeping yourself mentally and physically occupied throughout the day could help you to cope with stress gradually.

It is not possible for you to to eliminate all stress from your daily life. After all, some stress are good for health as it helps the mind and body to stay sharp and focus. Nevertheless, it is important that you take necessary precautions to prevent stress from causing disruptions to your physical and mental health.

Coping with aging anxiety

Research indicates that over 11% of people over the age of 55 suffer from some form of anxiety disorder. Just because you are getting older does not necessary imply you will be smarter and better in control of life compare to younger adults or teens. Conversely living beyond age 55 does not mean you will lead a less quality life compare to the younger generations. Aging does not equate to increase ability to handle stress and anxiety or vice versa. On the other hand, it can be quite challenging and difficult to treat aging people that suffer from anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorder can be classified into different types; general anxiety disorder better known as GAD is one of the most common forms of anxiety that affect the aging population. Some of the symptoms of GAD include insomnia, unwarranted and unnecessary worry and anxiety over real or imaginary situations and circumstances as well as muscle tension and fatigue.

Psychological and social problems may build up across time and if these problems are not dealt with, it could lead to severe depression and in more serious cases leads to mental illness. Doctors may prescribe anti anxiety drugs such as antidepressants or benzodiazepines to deal with serious anxiety problems. Older adults are known to experience side effects from anti-anxiety drugs at lower dosages than younger adults.

Seniors are usually more prone to fall sick and thus may have to increase intake of medication dosage and frequency to treat aging related illnesses. Our body's ability to breakdown, filter and expel harmful toxins from the body is impacted as one grows older. Accumulated toxins in the body, due to prolong intake of oral medications may affect hormones which are responsible for controlling stress and anxiety.

It takes longer time for elderly folks to metabolize and absorb drugs taken, thus making the drugs to be more risky and harmful even at doses deemed safe for younger people due to the fact that the medicine stays longer in the body. Sedatives such as Valium or Xanax could impair thinking ability and cause seniors to fall. A holistic treatment approach involving both cognitive behavioral therapies along side anxiety drug medications can boost and increase recovery of seniors.

Coping With Anxiety Via Relaxation

Many anxiety sufferers are learning the proper cognitive tools to overcome their anxiety. It isn’t easy. It takes commitment. Learning to relax with anxiety takes daily practice and commitment. Here are some relaxation tips to get you started:

1.Acceptance - Whatever we resist will persist. Try not to see yourself as fighting your anxiety. Instead, see yourself as moving toward your goal of relaxation.

2.Talk to someone - Many anxiety sufferers feel better almost immediately when they have a supportive person to talk with.

3.Knowledge - The more you know about your condition, the better equipped you’ll be. Things work better when we understand why we are doing them.

4.Breathing Techniques - Practice belly breathing. Breathe in to the count of 3 and out to the count of 4.

5.Meditation - Listen to guided meditation tapes or CDs.

6.Journal - Keep a notebook handy during the day, and when you recognize a “what if this happens?” thought forming, write it down. Review it later, when you are more relaxed. Ask the trigger question again, as if it were true. What would you do? Keeping a journal helps you discover possible hidden issues.

7.Take a nightly news vacation - Before bed, listen to relaxing music or read a book. If your habit is to watch the nightly news, try watching it first thing in the morning instead.
