Indispensable leads to no promotion?

It is not surprising for some people to want to keep vital knowledge and expertise they possess with regards to their profession and responsibilities to themselves. Some people are just plain simply worry or afraid that their job may be threatened if someone else in the company is equally capable of undertaking and performing their roles and responsibilities. No doubt the more proficient, knowledgeable and skillful we are with our job and the less people knows about our area of work or understanding our work, the least likely it will be for us to be axed or retrench during company down turn. However we should also take note that the more indispensable we become with regards to our job responsibilities and roles or if we become too good technically within our area of work, the less likely it would be for us to get promoted to the management level simply for the fact that there is no one to fill up and undertake our responsibilities. Have you heard of the joke whereby usually it's only the less technical people who gets to be promoted to the management position? We could learn something from this joke isnt it?

In summary do share your knowledge and expertise with others in the team. You got nothing to loose and everything to gain by doing so.

Cheers!
